Eljodii Gallery's Bole Terra Rosa Sculptures

Eljodii Artist’s Statement

Trees formation and the Soul of Man

“Our sculptures are planned, but, unplanned. When they are planned, then they are executed as planned. Unplanned they change in design and shape with curves and are not precisely followed. This may sound unethical or unaesthetically naïve, but, that is how we began to create our sculptures.

Taking the unplanned shapes and building a form to see that form become something new… you don’t have a prescribed destination, but, getting there is intriguing and unknown. To see how these shapes evolve into a unique form… that is the exciting part. You start on this journey and you don’t know where it is going to take you. Although, we most of the time start with a sketch, the clay has a mind of its own and the journey will take us elsewhere. It is not that we cannot stick to a plan, but it is the spiritual and emotional journey that takes you on a different path.”

Eljodii - Barbados

Eljodii represents Dianne Walcott and Ellon Lewis. Eljodii was established four years ago and produced "Bole Terra Rosa Ceramic- Sculptures- One of a Kind".
These  unique and innovative sculptures gave Eljodii the opportunities to showcase at Barbados Manufacturers Association Exposition  Bmex 2011, the Caribbean Craft and Gift Show, and build Bronze and Granite Sculptures at the 12th China Changchun Sculpture Symposium.  Dianne and Ellon held their first solo exhibition titled "Experiences" at the Gallery of Caribbean Art on June 9, 2012 .It was a successful , creative, innovative and internationally curated exposition.

“Trees” are the provocative motif of our sculpture “Facial Moods”.

Facial moods emerging from the ‘tree’ motif is intent to connect with people, to play with space and volume within the visual intellectualism of the theme; at the same time express, or make the viewer experience some form of emotional responses. This is not the intention of the artist, but, it emerges within the realm of artistic expression.

“Facial Moods” is an experimental innovative sculptural form that is in the round, square, triangular, oblong or hexagon, but, in the round with an open spacial design may contradict the tradition form of sculpture. It is within this context of artistic realm, all the structural formation has been broken to create an environmental space within the sculpture where light and water plays an important role.

As Caribbean Artists, where the prominent faces of our Afro-Caribbean people are expressed through a variety of characteristics developed through amalgamation. The process is to capture these expressions in a mode that befitting to the structural design.

Facial moods are unique and expressive of inner feelings: happiness, love, respect, sadness, doubt and frustration that will venture into anger and misgivings.

It all concluded within the frame work of comical, laughable, peace, accomplishment and joy.

All this emotions are within this sculptural accomplishment “Facial Moods”.

“Moments in Time”. It reflects the human nature of man’s Intrinsic or “Extrinsic”. Extrinsic is the motion of the spirituality to the connectivity.  The intrinsic breaks the barriers of hindrance towards unification of Caribbean people who suffered for four hundred years.

The bond embraces us through Calypso and Carnival celebrations. A Shango or Kumina rhythm that makes you feel to dance. Why are you shaking? You don’t know……that is Extrinsic.

Life has a way of bringing you to the places where you belong. Sometimes you are aware of the place that is conducive to you in more ways than one. But unforeseen forces gives convincing reasons why you should be somewhere else or why you should not be involve with the thing you love the most or the thing you want to do from the start.

Then out of the blues….. Sculpture. Ceramic- Sculpture. Recreating the elements for "Bole Terra Rosa" sculptures.
